The Lustre client in the mainline Linux kernel has gone from being hated to accepted and now is looking to leave the staging area. We will reflect on the milestones reached as well as what has been accomplished in this last year. Over this last year we have witness a convergence of both the OpenSFS and upstream client. The upstream client has gone from Lustre version 2.4.92 to Lustre 2.8 with many patches from both the 2.9 and latest master merged in. By the time of the LUG the upstream client will be in sync with the OpenSFS branch. At the same time the unique work present in the upstream client is being ported to the OpenSFS branch. At LUG details of the progress of this work will be presented. The topic of what is finally needed to leave the staging area will be gone over. In order for the Lustre upstream client to move out of staging we have to meet the requirements of Greg Kroah-Hartman who maintains the staging tree and then meet the requirements of Al Viro who is maintainer of the VFS layer. Those requirements will be listed in the presentation and how far long that work is. Lastly the impact of what an out of staging Lustre client will mean in the future.
